About Poocks Cottage
Poocks Cottage, sitting by the river Oare in the hamlet of Oareford, has been in our family for over forty years. Although we have kept its simple character as a place to switch off and recharge, it is today it is a much warmer and more comfortable cottage than in the early days than when the snow would come under the door in winter!
Oareford is in the Doone Valley on the northern edge of Exmoor, one valley in from the sea. Porlock Weir, Lynton and Lynmouth are all nearby. The nearest shopping is at Porlock or Lynton, where you can get most things you will need. The nearest supermarket is at Minehead.
For us it has been very much a family home, but it works well for people of all ages; for those wanting a quiet few days of reading, playing games and unwinding just as much as for those who want to get out on the moors or on to a stretch of the South West Coast Path.
Don’t come if you want distraction – the big excitement of the day is when the farmer goes by, and we don’t have a telly (although we do have wifi). But if you want peace, quiet and beautiful landscapes, and if you enjoy watching the house martins in the summer, the heron on the river and the buzzards soaring overhead, Poocks is the place for you.
